What One Thing Has Had the Most Influence on My Life and Why?

by Holly Damron

Funny how life’s experiences influence your life and make you into the person you never thought you could be.  I would like to share with you the one thing that has had the most influence on my life; an experience that was not only challenging, but also required me to step out of my comfort zone.

Although small-scale and local, competing in the “Junior Miss Peach Days Pageant” was an intimidating venture in my eyes.  It involved publicly demonstrating my very best to family, peers, community and a group of judges.  The very thought of standing in front of a crowd was terrifying; however, I took on the challenge.  I wanted so badly to earn a “place” in the pageant and ride on a beautiful float, down Main Street of Ferron, Utah.

The night of the pageant was electrifying and thrilling.  The competition was tough and began with talent.  I chose to sing a classic Connie Francis song from the “Fifties.”  I have never been that nervous!  My mother coached me on interviewing skills, which was the next phase of the competition.  Being put on the spot like that was simply mortifying!  Now, phase three, the “evening wear,” was a little more up my alley.  I have always loved dressing up in a beautiful gown, but modeling it on-stage was another story.  Finally, the competitions of the pageant were over and I could breathe a sigh of relief.  However, now, the anticipation of the pageant host announcing the winners was nearly too much to bear.  First mentioned, was the “Second Attendant.”  It was not I.  Then … I could not believe my ears … “Holly Damron” over the loud speaker as “First Attendant of the Miss Peach Days Pageant!”  It was truly a moment of elation and feeling of great accomplishment.  My hard work and determination had paid off!  What a boost of encouragement and impact this had made on my life!

From this experience, I have overcome my shyness and gained greater self-confidence in my abilities and myself.  It has opened the doors to the performing arts, speech and debate team, and other pageants.  I have built upon the personal qualities that I have been gifted with and developed better communication skills.  I am encouraged to be a leader and to explore new possibilities.  I realize that even the challenges in life can be fun, as well as rewarding.  I have gained confidence to try new things I never thought possible.

Being involved with those in the same areas of interest has generated a great amount of enthusiasm and encouragement in my direction.  But, most of all, this experience revealed the value of diligence, persistence, and never giving up when you have a dream.  The rewards of these traits are the building blocks of my future.  I am so thankful that I have chosen to step out of my comfort zone and be challenged.
